OpenAI's DevDay on 29 September 2026 announced more than 20 things, but only a handful change marketing work: GPT-6.1 Sol as a much cheaper near-flagship model, always-on Dots agents, team features such as Space, Pages and Team Tasks, and plugin extensions that put brands inside ChatGPT. Most launches are limited to paid tiers or preview. As of 30 September 2026, treat capability claims as OpenAI-reported until you have tested them.
Key Takeaways
- GPT-6.1 Sol is priced at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output, which OpenAI describes as one-fifth of GPT-6 Astra's standard prices.
- Dots agents are "always-on" assistants, available to Pro and Business Premium in eligible markets, and in beta for some enterprise-type plans with admin controls.
- ChatGPT Space, Pages and Team Tasks target team workflows; Team Tasks can run on a schedule or on events such as new email or Slack messages.
- Plugin Extensions and Sign in with ChatGPT are distribution stories, and they are the ones to watch for brand visibility.
- The Decisions API was in limited preview, with a broader release planned "within days" per OpenAI.
- OpenAI says ChatGPT has 1.2 billion weekly users; that is a company figure, not an audited one.
What was announced, and what it means for marketing work
OpenAI published a DevDay 2026 recap listing the launches. I grouped them by how likely a marketer is to use each in the next 90 days.
Use now or soon
GPT-6.1 Sol. OpenAI says it "nearly matches GPT-6 Astra's intelligence" on agentic coding, computer use and professional work at one-fifth of Astra's standard token prices. It is available in the API as gpt-6.1-sol and in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users. I cover it in detail in my GPT-6.1 Sol post.
ChatGPT Pages and collaborative slides. Pages are shared documents where people and agents co-write, with charts and images. Collaborative slides support comments and export to PowerPoint or Google Slides. OpenAI listed slides as launching within weeks, so they are not yet in everyone's hands.
Team Tasks and @ChatGPT in Slack and Teams. For agencies, the useful idea is delegating recurring work, such as a weekly performance summary, and mentioning ChatGPT in a channel without every teammate needing a licence, per OpenAI. Business and Enterprise only.
Meetings plugin. Beta on the macOS desktop app for Pro and Business: notes, action items and summaries. OpenAI says audio is deleted after notes complete.
Test carefully
Dots agents. OpenAI calls them "remarkably capable, always-on agents" that handle ongoing responsibilities. Availability is Pro and Business Premium in eligible markets, with beta access for Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare where admins disable them by default. Always-on agents acting for you in inboxes and tools need a permissions review before you switch them on. I would start with read-only tasks.
Agents API with computer use. Includes multi-agent support, tool search, tool calling and context compaction, with OpenAI managing infrastructure. Useful for developers building marketing automations, less so for non-technical teams today.
Decisions API. OpenAI describes it as real-time decisions on user-defined questions with pre-defined answers, from text or image context. Examples given: content classification, request routing and agent action selection. That reads like a fit for triaging leads, tagging content or routing support, but it was a limited preview at announcement.
Ultrafast tier. OpenAI says up to 8x faster token generation in Codex (300 tokens per second) and up to 6x in the API. GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast is available on Pro 500 and Enterprise; GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast was listed as coming soon. Speed matters for interactive tools, less for batch content.
Watch as distribution channels
Plugin Extensions. Developers can build experiences inside ChatGPT with sidebar homes, interactive panels and custom file viewers, on all plans, per OpenAI. It also announced improved plugin creation and discovery, with a redesigned submission workflow, better ranking and recommendations, and user-controlled permissions. For brands with a useful tool, this is a possible new discovery surface. Nobody has published results on how much traffic it sends.
Sign in with ChatGPT. One identity across 16+ partner tools (OpenAI named Cognition Devin, Notion, Vercel and others), with plan usage counting toward limits. Whether that becomes a distribution channel or a lock-in is a fair question; I look at it in the wider stack review.
OpenAI Marketplace. Enterprise customers can apply existing commitments to approved partner software, with 32 launch partners including HubSpot and Salesforce. Relevant if you sell software to enterprises.
The numbers OpenAI put on stage
| Claim | Source | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|
| 1.2 billion weekly ChatGPT users | OpenAI recap | Company-reported; it does not say how many visit or click out |
| 20+ announcements | OpenAI recap | A count, not a benefit |
| GPT-6.1 Sol at one-fifth of Astra's prices | OpenAI | Price is documented; capability parity is OpenAI's claim |
| Up to 8x faster (Codex) / 6x (API) | OpenAI | Vendor speeds "up to"; test your workload |
| Pro 500 at 25x Plus usage | OpenAI | Price not specified in the recap I read |
The user figure is the one that gets quoted in pitch decks. It measures usage of the product, not referral volume to your site, so it does not tell you your traffic will change.
What I would do this week
- Pick one workflow to move to Sol. Take a repeatable content task, such as briefs or metadata drafts, run 20 samples against your current model and compare edit time.
- Read the plan matrix. Confirm whether Space, Pages and Team Tasks are in your plan before planning around them.
- Set an agent policy before Dots. Decide which accounts and tools an always-on agent may touch and what needs human approval.
- Check plugin fit. If you have a calculator, template or dataset people use, sketch what a plugin version would do. Do not commit budget until there is a traffic case study.
- Ignore the leaderboard noise. Model claims move weekly. My decision rule is in choosing an AI model for marketing.
Gaps and open questions
- Pro 500 pricing. The recap I read says the plan offers 25x Plus usage and includes Ultrafast, but did not state a price. Check OpenAI's pricing page.
- Dots behaviour in practice. No independent tests existed when I wrote this, on 30 September 2026.
- Decisions API scope. Limited preview; "broad release planned within days" is not a date.
- Market availability. Dots is for "eligible markets". If you work from India, as I do, check your account rather than assuming.
- Plugin traffic. OpenAI said 1.2 billion weekly users are a launch surface, but has not published referral or conversion data for plugins.
Cautions for content and SEO teams
Faster, cheaper models lower the cost of publishing more, and that is exactly when quality slips. Google's spam policies are still the guardrail. I would use Sol for research, first drafts and structured tasks, and keep editorial judgement and original data with humans. In my organic work for Masai School, the growth came from consistent, specific content, not volume alone, and that lesson holds when generation costs fall.
FAQ
What did OpenAI announce at DevDay 2026?
OpenAI listed more than 20 launches on 29 September 2026, including GPT-6.1 Sol, Ultrafast speed tiers, Dots agents, ChatGPT Space and Pages, Team Tasks, Plugin Extensions, the Decisions API, an Agents API with computer use, and Sign in with ChatGPT.
What is GPT-6.1 Sol?
It is an OpenAI model that the company says nearly matches GPT-6 Astra on agentic coding, computer use and professional work at one-fifth of Astra's prices. API pricing is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens.
What are Dots agents?
OpenAI describes them as always-on agents that handle ongoing responsibilities for a user. They are available to Pro and Business Premium in eligible markets, with beta access and admin controls for some enterprise-type plans.
Which announcements matter most for marketers?
GPT-6.1 Sol for cost, Team Tasks and Pages for workflow, and Plugin Extensions for possible brand discovery. The rest are mostly developer or enterprise features.
Is ChatGPT really at 1.2 billion weekly users?
That is OpenAI's own figure from the DevDay recap. I have not seen independent verification, and it says nothing about how many users click through to websites.
What does Pro 500 cost?
The recap I read said it offers 25x the usage of Plus and includes Ultrafast access but did not state a price. Check OpenAI's pricing page before deciding.
Can small agencies use Team Tasks?
Team Tasks and @ChatGPT in Slack and Microsoft Teams are listed for Business and Enterprise plans. Agencies on lower tiers would not have them.
Will plugins send traffic to my site?
Unknown. OpenAI announced better discovery and ranking for plugins, but no traffic data has been published. Treat it as an experiment.
Should I switch my whole stack to OpenAI?
No. Test one workflow, compare cost and edit time, and keep the ability to switch. Model claims are vendor-reported and change quickly.
