Promptwatch reported that Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations fell from about 3.83% to 0.52% between mid-July and 14-17 August 2026, an 86.4% decline. That is a real measurement from one tracking firm, which itself calls it provisional. As of 30 September 2026, no one outside OpenAI has established why it happened, so the sensible response is to diversify, not to abandon Reddit or to rush into it.
Key Takeaways
- The reported drop is 3.83% to 0.52% of ChatGPT Search citations, from Promptwatch data covering 18 July to 17 August 2026.
- Promptwatch says the figure is provisional and it cannot rule out a data-collection issue.
- A change on 8 August in how ChatGPT runs "fanout" queries may be related, but the timing gap to the steepest drop is six days.
- Reddit citations fell far less in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, per Semrush's write-up, which suggests a ChatGPT-specific shift.
- An earlier Reddit collapse in 2025 partly recovered, according to reporting, so this could also be temporary.
- Treat any single platform's citation pattern as unstable; build presence in several places.
The news in numbers
The data comes from Promptwatch, an AI visibility tracker, as reported by Search Engine Land (19 August 2026) and Search Engine Journal.
| Period | Reddit share of ChatGPT Search citations |
|---|---|
| 18 July to 7 August | 3.83% average |
| 8 August | First decline, from the high 3% range to the mid 2% range |
| 14 to 17 August | 0.52% average (86.4% below baseline) |
The Semrush blog reports the same headline drop, and adds that Reddit citations fell only about 11% in Google AI Overviews and 31% in AI Mode over the comparison. Search Engine Land noted that Reddit's share in AI Overviews slid gradually from roughly 2.5% in early July to about 2.1% in August.
What we know
The measurement window and source
One tracker, one set of queries. Promptwatch's baseline ran 18 July to 7 August. Other trackers have not, to my knowledge, published matching data that I could verify. Other sites have written about the drop, some with larger percentages, so check which dataset a figure comes from.
The steepness is ChatGPT-specific in this data
The much smaller declines in Google's AI features suggest the shift is not "AI search stopped trusting Reddit" in general. It looks more like something in ChatGPT's retrieval process.
Something changed in ChatGPT's query behaviour on 8 August
Per Search Engine Journal, Promptwatch observed that queries using the site: operator jumped from 0.37% to 16.8% of fanout queries on 8 August, a 46-fold increase, and average fanout queries per response rose from 1.08 to 1.83. "Fanout" queries are the sub-searches a model generates when answering a prompt.
What we do not know
Why it happened
The commonly cited theory is that the 8 August site: operator change reduced Reddit's appearance. Search Engine Journal points out a problem: the steepest drop began on 14 August, six days later. The timing does not cleanly line up.
Other possibilities in circulation include data-provider access changes, a deliberate source-quality adjustment, or a measurement artefact. I cannot tell you which, and neither could the articles I read.
Whether it is permanent
An earlier Reddit collapse occurred in 2025. Semrush describes it as August 2025 and a fall from roughly 60% to 10%; Search Engine Journal dates a similar drop to September 2025 and ties it to Google removing the num=100 parameter. The reports disagree on the month, so I hedge on the date. The point is that previous swings happened, and this one may also move again.
What OpenAI says
Semrush reports OpenAI said it does not set fixed visibility levels for individual sites and that ChatGPT continues to cite Reddit. Search Engine Journal, citing Gizmodo, says OpenAI did not respond to a request for comment. I could not resolve this discrepancy, so I treat OpenAI's position as unclear.
Whether the measurement is right
Promptwatch says it cannot rule out an issue with its own data collection. That honesty is worth noting: the drop is a report, not a verdict.
Why this matters even if you never post on Reddit
Many GEO playbooks in 2025 and 2026 told brands to seed Reddit threads because Reddit was a heavily cited source. If one platform's citation share can fall by more than four-fifths in days, any strategy built on that single channel is fragile. This is the same lesson as building on any borrowed platform.
It also connects to a wider point about evidence. As I argue in my post on AEO case studies, a lift or drop measured in a few weeks needs a control and a check for platform-side changes.
What to do this week
- Do not delete your Reddit presence. Participation has value beyond ChatGPT citations, including Google's AI features and direct community trust.
- Check your own data. If you track ChatGPT citations, compare July-to-August for your domains. Did anything you influenced move?
- Log the date. Mark 8 and 14 August 2026 in your reporting notes.
- Ask your tool vendor. Is their data collection unchanged over the window? Does the drop appear in their own baseline?
- Rebalance effort. Put equal effort into first-party pages, third-party reviews, and industry publications.
What a resilient source mix looks like
- Your own site: clear, specific pages that answer questions directly.
- Reputable third-party coverage: trade press, review sites, comparison pages.
- Communities: Reddit and others, with genuine participation and disclosure.
- Structured data and entity clarity: consistent naming across your profiles.
- Owned audiences: email and social, unaffected by any model tweak.
What not to conclude
- "Reddit is dead for marketing." The data covers ChatGPT Search citation share, not Reddit's value as a community.
- "ChatGPT no longer uses community content." One tracker cannot say that.
- "This proves the fanout change caused it." The timing does not fit neatly.
- "GEO does not work." Citation volatility is a reason for caution, not for dismissal.
The fair take
Promptwatch deserves credit for flagging its own uncertainty. Commentators who declare a cause are ahead of the evidence. OpenAI's position is unclear from the coverage I read. My view: the drop is probably real enough to notice, may be reversible, and is a good test of whether your strategy has a single point of failure.
As of 30 September 2026
I have not seen new primary data since the mid-August reporting. If a tracker or OpenAI publishes more, update your view.
FAQ
Did ChatGPT stop citing Reddit?
No. According to Promptwatch's data, Reddit's share fell to about 0.52% of citations in mid-August 2026, down from 3.83%, so it still appears but far less often.
How big was the Reddit citation drop?
Promptwatch measured an 86.4% decline in Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations between its 18 July to 7 August baseline and 14 to 17 August. The firm calls the figure provisional.
What caused the drop?
Unknown. A change on 8 August to how ChatGPT writes fanout queries is a candidate, but the steepest fall started six days later. OpenAI's explanation, if any, is unclear from the coverage.
Did Reddit also fall in Google's AI features?
Much less. Semrush reports declines of about 11% in AI Overviews and 31% in AI Mode, suggesting a ChatGPT-specific change.
Has this happened before?
Yes. Reports describe an earlier collapse in 2025, dated August by Semrush and September by Search Engine Journal. The sources disagree on timing, so verify before quoting.
Should I stop posting on Reddit for AI visibility?
I would not. Reddit still serves communities and Google surfaces, and this data covers one platform over a short window. Keep participation genuine and diversify.
Can I trust AI visibility tracker data?
With care. Trackers sample prompts differently, and Promptwatch itself says it cannot rule out a collection problem. Ask vendors to explain methodology, as SparkToro's research also advises.
Does this mean citations are unstable in general?
Citations do vary widely. SparkToro's research found AI brand recommendation lists rarely repeated across runs, so track trends across many prompts rather than single checks.
What is a fanout query?
It is a sub-query that a model generates while answering a question, such as searching for reviews of a specific product. Promptwatch reported the average number of fanout queries per response rose from 1.08 to 1.83 on 8 August.
