AEO vs digital PR

AEO vs digital PR

Both sell the same promise: other people talking about you. They aim at different places, and only one of them is chosen for whether a machine can retrieve it.

The short answer

Digital PR targets publications and the links and reputation that follow. Answer engine work targets the specific sources a model retrieves from, which includes publications but weights community threads, review sites, directories and reference pages far more heavily than a PR plan usually does. The disciplines overlap; the target list does not.

What ranked on 23 September 2026: Agencies in both camps now describe their service in the other's language, which makes the category pages nearly interchangeable. The practical difference shows up in what each proposes to do in month one.

Where they actually diverge

A PR placement and a cited source are related but not the same object, and confusing them wastes budget.

  • PR optimises for the publication's authority and audience; answer work optimises for retrievability and consensus across many sources
  • A single prestigious feature is a PR win and a weak signal to a model reconciling a dozen mentions
  • Community and forum presence is usually beneath a PR programme and visibly influential in AI answers
  • PR measures coverage and links; answer work measures how you are described when the question is asked
  • Timelines differ: a placement lands on a date, a description changes when enough sources agree

Things that sound right and are not

  • ClaimWe got covered in a major title, so AI will cite us.

It helps and it is one source. Models synthesising a recommendation usually draw on several, and a single feature rarely outweighs a consistent description elsewhere.

  • ClaimForums are beneath our brand.

They are read heavily by these systems and by your buyers. Participation does not mean astroturfing; it means answering questions where they are asked, under your own name.

  • ClaimWe can drop PR entirely.

Publications still carry weight, especially for entity credibility and for the reference pages that models treat as authoritative. This is a reallocation, not a replacement.

Where to start

  1. 01List the sources assistants actually cite when answering your category questions. That list is your target list, and it usually surprises people.
  2. 02Compare it with your current PR target list and note the overlap, which is often smaller than expected.
  3. 03Cover the retrievable sources first: reference pages, review platforms, directories, the two or three communities where your category is discussed.
  4. 04Keep PR for the placements that also serve credibility, and stop counting coverage volume as the outcome.
  5. 05Measure by how you are described in answers, not by placements secured.

Questions

Should we brief our PR agency on AEO?
Give them the source list from your own sampling rather than the acronym. A target list they can pitch is actionable; a trend description is not.
Do links still matter for AI visibility?
Indirectly, because they influence the search index several engines retrieve from. Treat them as one input to retrievability rather than as the mechanism.
Which produces results faster?
PR has a publication date, so it feels faster. A correction to how you are described often shows up in answers sooner, because it changes a source a model was already reading.
