Evaluating organic growth

Best Organic Growth Marketers: How to Evaluate One

Organic is the slowest channel to prove and the easiest to take credit for. Work out whether someone builds an asset or rents attention.

What the job is

Organic growth builds distribution you own rather than rent. Pick the few channels where your audience already is, make something worth returning to, and keep going long enough to compound.

  • Channel selection, mostly subtraction
  • Assets that keep earning after publication
  • A cadence the team survives without heroics
  • Retention and repeat visits, not first touches
  • Honest attribution
  • A payback horizon agreed first

7 criteria I would actually use

  1. 01

They name the payback horizon first

Eighteen months and four months are different decisions. No horizon means no costed plan.

  2. 02

They cut channels, not add them

The useful plan names the two that matter and calls the rest a tax.

  3. 03

They tell an asset from a campaign

A page ranking for three years and a post that peaked in a week are different investments.

  4. 04

They treat concentration as a risk

One channel producing everything is a good quarter and a bad strategy.

  5. 05

They ask about the offer first

Organic amplifies what the product already does, including an unclear pitch.

  6. 06

    They measure returning attention

Subscribers, returning sessions and direct traffic show an audience forming. Reach alone does not.

  7. 07

They have run something past a year

Compounding starts after year one. Three-month sprints do not show it.

Claims to doubt

Claims I would be skeptical of.

Includes claims I could make myself. Flip a card for the reason.

  • Claim

    Organic is free

  • Claim

    Growth hacking

  • Claim

We grew this account by 400%

  • Claim

    A proven playbook

  • Claim

    Follower growth as the headline

Worth evaluating alongside me

  • A performance marketer

If you need demand this quarter and have budget, paid is honest. Start organic alongside.

  • A content lead in house

When the channels are known and production is the constraint, hiring usually beats contracting within a year.

  • A product-led growth specialist

If the product itself could drive acquisition, the leverage is outside marketing.

  • Nobody, until the offer is clear

If you cannot say who it is for and why they switch, organic makes the confusion louder.

Where I fit

The part where I make a case

I ran this as an operator. At Masai School, Instagram went from 26K to 117K and LinkedIn from 50K to 200K on organic distribution, alongside SEO and AEO.

I am most useful for subtraction: which channels to stop, what to publish less of, which single asset to build properly.

If your constraint is production volume, an in-house hire or an agency fits better.

Questions

Asked most.

How long before organic growth shows?

Search takes months. Social shows faster but earns trust slower. At month three, check whether anything is repeating.

How should we split spend between organic and paid?

Short sales cycles reward paid. Long, research-heavy cycles reward organic.

Can one person do organic growth for a company?

One person can own direction and build version one. Sustained multi-channel publishing needs more hands.

What is the first thing you would look at?

What already works. Most companies have one page or post that outperformed and was never repeated on purpose.

Evidence, labelled

What is confirmed, what is reported, what is a hunch.
