AI Mode is a Google Search experience that answers complex questions with a generated, conversational response and links to web sources, and lets you keep asking follow-ups. Google says it is "particularly helpful for queries where further exploration, reasoning, or complex comparisons are needed." As of 4 October 2026, it is a separate mode you enter from the search box or from an AI Overview, and its answers can come from different Gemini models depending on your plan.
Key Takeaways
- AI Mode is a conversational search experience; an AI Overview is a summary inside a normal results page. They are connected, not identical.
- Google's documentation says no special requirements or optimizations are needed to appear in AI Mode: pages must be indexed and snippet-eligible.
- Google said at I/O 2026 that AI Mode passed one billion monthly users, with queries more than doubling every quarter. That is Google's own claim.
- The model behind AI Mode changes. Gemini 3.8 Flash arrived on 2 September 2026 for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, and an early citation problem was reported and then fixed.
- Because the model, plan and interface vary, any AI Mode visibility test needs the date, model and account type written next to it.
- AI Mode traffic is reported inside Search Console's Web totals, not as its own line.
AI Mode: the definition
AI Mode is Google's conversational AI search experience that fans a question out into many searches and assembles a response with source links. Google's AI features documentation groups it with AI Overviews and says both use "query fan-out," issuing multiple related searches across subtopics to produce a response with "a wider and more diverse set of helpful links."
Wikipedia's entry, a useful secondary source for history, says AI Mode was introduced in March 2025 and supports text, image and voice input (Wikipedia). Today it is far more central to Search than it was at launch. That brings us to what has changed.
What changed in AI Mode: I/O 2026 to this month
May 2026: the search box and the flow from Overviews
In Google's I/O 2026 Search post, Google said it had rebuilt the search box with AI, supporting text, images, files, videos and Chrome tabs. It said users can ask a follow-up from an AI Overview and flow into AI Mode with context kept, and that AI Mode had "surpassed one billion monthly users." Those are company statements and were not independently audited.
2 September 2026: Gemini 3.8 Flash
Google announced Gemini 3.8 Flash on 2 September as available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the Gemini app and AI Mode, per Google's model announcement. Search Engine Roundtable reported that Search VP Robby Stein said it had "landed in Search," selectable from the plus icon in AI Mode (Search Engine Roundtable). Search Engine Journal noted it was the third Flash release in about six weeks (Search Engine Journal).
I covered the practical implications in my Gemini 3.8 Flash and AI Mode visibility post.
The citation problem and the fix
Search Engine Roundtable reported on 3 September that AI Mode with Gemini 3.8 Flash was less likely to cite and link sources than earlier models, with screenshots from Gagan Ghotra and Glenn Gabe. Google's Robby Stein was quoted as saying "This isn't working as intended, and we'll roll out a fix soon," and the same report says links were restored by the next morning (Search Engine Roundtable). The lesson for marketers is simple: a drop in AI Mode links can be a product bug, not a verdict on your content.
Late September to early October: interface moves
Search Engine Roundtable's October 2026 webmaster report lists Gemini 3.8 Live arriving with UI improvements, and AI Overview changes: links steering people toward AI Mode, more external links, citation cards repositioned to the bottom and a loading indicator replacing a "Show More" button. The same report mentions Google testing publisher compensation for content used in AI features, which I treat as a separate story.

AI Mode vs AI Overviews vs classic search
| Classic results | AI Overview | AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Format | Ranked links | Summary above links | Conversational answer |
| Follow-ups | New search | Can continue into AI Mode | Built in |
| Source display | Links | Links in or beside summary | Links within response |
| Best for | Navigation, known sites | Quick gist | Complex, multi-part questions |
I explained the Overview side in what an AI Overview is. The short version: the Overview gives a gist, and AI Mode is where the research happens.
Do you need to do anything special?
Not according to Google. Its documentation says "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary," with the standard conditions of being indexed and eligible for snippets. So the playbook is the one that has always mattered, adjusted for conversations:
- Answer first. Put the direct answer under each heading.
- Cover the follow-ups. AI Mode conversations branch. If a reader asks "how much" after "what is," your page should have the cost section.
- Be consistent across pages. Define a term the same way every time.
- Keep facts dated and sourced. Models cite what can be verified.
- Make the site fast and crawlable. Basics still gate everything else.
How to measure AI Mode honestly
AI feature traffic is counted in Search Console's overall Web search type, according to Google. There is no standalone AI Mode filter in that report, so the usual route is manual prompt checks. When I do them, I log:
- Date and time.
- Country and device.
- Signed in or out, and plan type (free, AI Pro, Ultra).
- Model selected, if the picker is visible.
- Exact prompt and each follow-up.
- Whether my page or a competitor's was linked.
Without that, you cannot tell whether a change came from your content, Google's model, or the interface. After the early September citation bug, I would not trust any week-over-week comparison that skips the model field.
Common mistakes
- Calling it "Google's chatbot." Gemini is the app; AI Mode is a Search experience with links.
- Reporting a single screenshot as a trend. Answers vary by user and moment.
- Assuming free and paid users see the same thing. The model picker for Gemini 3.8 Flash was reported for paid plans.
- Optimizing only for one prompt. The follow-up chain is the real unit.
A short checklist for this week
- List 15 research-style queries your buyers use.
- Run each in AI Mode on desktop and mobile, logging model and plan.
- Record linked sources and any follow-up suggestions.
- Find the gaps: a sub-question you do not answer, a stale fact, a missing definition.
- Fix the page and note the date of your change.
- Re-run in two to four weeks. Do not claim cause.
