For in-house marketers

AEO for a one-person marketing team

You have a full job already. This works as a change of emphasis inside it, not as a new workstream with its own plan.

The short answer

For a solo in-house marketer, the practical route is to fold answer engine work into what you already produce: restructure the pages you were going to write anyway so each answers one question completely, fix how third parties describe the company, and keep one fixed set of prompts sampled monthly so you have a number to report.

What ranked on 23 September 2026: Almost everything ranking on this topic is written for agencies selling the service or for teams with content resources. The practical constraint for an in-house marketer, which is time and internal approval, goes unmentioned.

What is different in-house

You are not short of ideas. You are short of hours, sign-off and a way to justify the work to someone who wants a metric.

  • Approval is usually the real bottleneck, so anything requiring legal or brand review for every change will not sustain
  • You already produce pages; the change is structural, not additional, which makes it defensible internally
  • You will be asked for a number, and this surface does not report one, so you have to manufacture the baseline yourself
  • Sales already knows which questions buyers ask, and that list is better than any keyword tool for this purpose
  • The work overlaps with ordinary SEO enough that it can be reported as one programme rather than two

Things that sound right and are not

  • ClaimI need budget approval before starting.

The first quarter of this is editing pages you already own. Asking for budget before you have a baseline is also the weaker version of the request.

  • ClaimWe should announce an AI visibility initiative.

It sets an expectation of numbers you cannot yet produce. Run it quietly for two months, then show a trend.

  • ClaimI will track everything.

A fixed set of twenty to forty prompts, sampled on a schedule, is the whole measurement. Broadening it mid-way makes the trend meaningless.

Where to start

  1. 01Get the twenty questions sales hears most, verbatim, and treat them as the prompt set.
  2. 02Sample those prompts across the assistants that matter to your buyers, record mention and description, and do it before changing anything.
  3. 03Rewrite the top five commercial pages so the first paragraph answers the question on its own.
  4. 04Fix the third-party descriptions of the company, starting with whichever source the assistants are visibly quoting.
  5. 05Report monthly on the trend across the fixed prompt set, and say plainly that it is a sample rather than a count.

Questions

How do I report this to a manager who wants traffic numbers?
Report it as a share-of-answer sample against a fixed prompt set, alongside the ordinary organic numbers it also improves. Be explicit that no engine publishes a citation count, so this is a survey rather than analytics.
Should we buy a monitoring tool?
Once the manual sampling is taking more than an hour a month, yes. Buy it for the time saved rather than for accuracy, because it is running the same prompts you would.
What do I stop doing to make room?
Usually the lowest-performing content cadence. Two well-structured pages a month that answer real questions will outperform eight posts written to fill a calendar, on this surface and the older one.
