AEO for local service businesses

For a local business, the assistant is usually reading your listings and reviews before it reads your website, if it reads your website at all.

The short answer

For local services, answer engine optimisation starts outside your site. Assistants answering a local question rely on maps listings, reviews and directories, so consistent business details, real review volume and clear service-area and pricing information matter more than page-level work.

What ranked on 23 September 2026: Local queries return maps results above almost everything else, and assistants answering location questions lean on the same underlying business data. The agency pages that rank for local AEO advice are, tellingly, national agencies.

What is different about local

The authoritative record of a local business is not its website. It is a set of listings the owner often has not looked at in a year.

  • Name, address and phone consistency across listings is the entity signal, and contradictions are common after a move or a rebrand
  • Review volume and recency carry more weight than review text, and a business with four reviews is invisible to a ranked question
  • Service area is a fact: which suburbs, how far, whether there is a call-out charge beyond it
  • Hours, emergency availability and response time answer the urgent questions that drive local demand
  • One physical location with several trade names is a frequent and self-inflicted identity problem

Things that sound right and are not

  • ClaimWe need a blog to rank in AI answers.

For a local trade, a blog is usually the least valuable thing on the list. Listings, reviews, service-area clarity and pricing come first by a wide margin.

  • ClaimWe serve the whole region.

Unusable as an answer. Name the places, and state what happens at the edge of the area.

  • ClaimPrices vary, so we cannot publish them.

A call-out fee, an hourly rate or a typical range is publishable and is the most requested missing fact in every local category.

Where to start

  1. 01Audit every listing for consistent name, address, phone and hours, and fix the contradictions first.
  2. 02Set up a routine that actually asks satisfied customers for reviews, because volume and recency are the levers.
  3. 03Publish your service area as a list of places, plus what happens outside it.
  4. 04Put a number on the page: call-out fee, hourly rate, or a typical job range with what changes it.
  5. 05Ask an assistant for a recommendation in your trade and town, and see which businesses it names and what it says about them.

Questions

Do we need AEO if we rank in the map pack?
Much of the work is the same work, and the map pack is fed by the same business data. The additional step is making sure the practical facts a person asks about, price, area and availability, exist as text.
How many reviews is enough?
Enough to be comparable with the businesses you lose to, which is a local number rather than a universal one. Look at who gets recommended in your area and count theirs.
Is this worth it for a one-van business?
The listings and review parts are, because they are cheap and they also drive ordinary local search. A paid AEO programme usually is not.
