The case against

When you do not need AEO yet

Many businesses are sold AI visibility while an ordinary problem eats the same budget. These are the cases to wait.

The short answer

Skip it for now if buyers do not research online, the site cannot be crawled, nobody can publish quickly, you cannot measure a baseline, or your base channel is unfinished. In each case the upstream constraint absorbs whatever an answer engine sends.

What ranked on 18 September 2026: Across sixteen commercial searches, no first-page result argued that a reader might not need the service. That gap is why this page exists.

Why upstream constraints win

An engine cannot quote a page it cannot fetch. Google says a page must be indexed and snippet-eligible to appear.

  • Content that exists only after a script runs
  • Key pages behind a login or region gate
  • Every URL returning a success status, even missing ones

Check before you buy

Three quick tests settle most cases.

  • List where the last twenty deals came from
  • Fetch your key pages without scripts and read them
  • Sample ten buyer questions in three engines

Questions

Asked most.

Is it too late to start AEO?

No. The surface is young and the inputs are durable. The risk is spending on visibility while the site is unreadable.

We are a small local business. Does this apply?

Partly. Accurate listings, reviews and a crawlable site do most of the work, and they feed the engines too.

Traffic is falling. Should we buy AEO?

Diagnose first. Split informational from commercial queries and compare click-through at stable positions.
