Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of creating and formatting content so that AI answer engines can easily understand it and surface it as the answer to a user's question. Conductor defines it as "the process of creating and formatting your content so that AI answer engines can easily understand and readily surface it to answer user questions." As of 4 October 2026, Google describes this kind of work as "still SEO," so AEO is best understood as SEO with a sharper focus on answers and citations.
Key Takeaways
- AEO means shaping content so a single answer, not just a page, can be selected, quoted or cited by an answer engine.
- The goal is inclusion in the answer; the usual metrics are citations, mentions and share of voice rather than only rankings and clicks.
- Google's guide says AEO and GEO are "still SEO" and that llms.txt, chunking and special schema are not required for its generative features.
- Practical AEO is mostly editing discipline: direct answers first, clear structure, verifiable facts, current dates and distinctive content.
- Advice such as "answer in 40-60 words" or "FAQ schema unlocks citations" is a hypothesis, not a rule. Test it on your own pages.
- AEO and SEO should run together: SEO helps content get found, AEO helps it get selected.
Answer engine optimization: the definition
Answer engine optimization is the practice of making content easy for AI answer engines to understand, extract and present as a direct response. Contently words it as structuring content so engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Gemini "cite it directly" (Contently). CXL puts the idea even more briefly: "AEO is about one thing: getting your content into the answer," and notes that the more useful unit is often the individual answer rather than the whole page (CXL).
An answer engine is a system that responds to a question with a direct answer instead of only a list of links. ChatGPT with search, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode all fit under that umbrella, and I have written separately about what an AI Overview is and what AI Mode is.
Where AEO came from
The idea predates today's chatbots. Search engines have long tried to answer questions directly, through featured snippets and voice assistants, and marketers began formatting content for those spots years ago. CXL's guide connects AEO to that lineage, including voice assistants. What changed in recent years is that generated answers now synthesize from many pages, so the competition is for credit inside a paragraph the engine writes. If you want the earlier thread, my post on why featured snippets still win shows how much of the groundwork still applies.
Glossary: AEO terms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Answer engine | A system that gives a direct answer to a question instead of just links. |
| AEO | Optimizing content so it can be chosen as the answer. |
| Answer capsule | A short, self-contained answer placed directly under a heading. |
| Citation | A link or attribution to your page inside an answer. |
| Mention | Your brand named in an answer, linked or not. |
| Share of voice | Share of tracked prompts where you appear compared with competitors. |
| Zero-click search | A search that ends without a click to a website. |
| Entity | A clearly identified brand, person or product that systems can recognize consistently. |
AEO vs SEO
SEO aims to rank pages and earn clicks; AEO aims to have your content selected as the answer. Conductor frames success as shifting from rankings, traffic and click-through rates toward visibility within answers, citations and share of voice. It also gives a practical conclusion I agree with: use both, since SEO helps content get found and AEO helps it get selected (Conductor).
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Unit of work | The page | The answer within the page |
| Main goal | Rank, click, convert | Be selected, cited, mentioned |
| Typical metrics | Rankings, sessions | Citations, mentions, share of voice |
| Key inputs | Crawlability, links, content quality | Direct answers, structure, evidence, entities |
| Overlap | Large | Large |
AEO vs GEO
Sources disagree on which term is broader. Conductor says GEO focuses on generative systems broadly while AEO targets answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Contently says GEO is the broader strategy for how engines represent a brand and AEO addresses answer-box citations. Wikipedia notes there is no consensus definition as of early 2026 and that practitioners use the terms interchangeably (Wikipedia). Jasper treats the two as complementary layers, with AEO driving answer extraction and GEO driving citation credibility (Jasper). My working rule: I say AEO when I am editing content to be extracted, and GEO when I am discussing brand presence across engines. See my GEO definition for the other side.
What Google says about AEO
Google's guide to optimizing for generative AI features, last updated 10 July 2026 per the page, states that "optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO." It says llms.txt files are not used by Google Search, that content does not need to be "chunked," that synonyms and variations need no special targeting, and that "structured data isn't required for generative AI search." It emphasizes distinctive content, technical SEO, and monitoring with Search Console's Generative AI performance report (Google Search Central). Search Engine Journal reported on the guide when it first appeared on 15 May 2026 (Search Engine Journal).
Two caveats. First, that guide speaks only for Google Search. Second, "no special markup needed" does not mean markup is harmful. Google's FAQ rich result, for instance, stopped appearing in Search in May 2026 per its FAQPage documentation, so do not add FAQ schema expecting a boost.
How to do AEO: a practical method
1. Start with a question list
Pull real questions from sales calls, support tickets, Search Console queries and "People also ask." Group them by intent.
2. Put the answer first
Under each question-style heading, open with a one- or two-sentence direct answer. Conductor and Contently both recommend answer-first writing; Contently suggests a 40-60 word capsule. I treat the length as a starting point, not a threshold, and test variations.
3. Structure for extraction
Use short paragraphs, labelled tables, numbered steps and definitions with a clear subject: "X is..." Tables work best when row and column labels are unambiguous, which I cover in comparison tables for AI search.
4. Support claims
Add named sources, dates and numbers you can trace. Say who made a claim. If a claim is vendor-reported, say so.
5. Keep it current
Contently cites that roughly 65% of AI bot crawls target content published within the past year; I could not trace that to a primary dataset, so I use it only as a reminder to refresh and date volatile facts.
6. Make it distinctive
Add first-hand process, original data or a worked example. Commodity answers are interchangeable; yours should not be.
7. Keep the technical base clean
Indexable, crawlable, fast, readable without JavaScript where possible.
How to measure AEO
Counting citations is not as simple as reading a report. A defensible process looks like this:
- Build a prompt panel of real buyer questions.
- Run it on a schedule on each engine, recording date, model, country and plan.
- Repeat runs, because answers vary.
- Score each run as cited, mentioned or absent.
- Report share of voice as a range with a trend.
For what to ask a vendor or agency that promises numbers, read why most AEO case studies prove nothing. If you are scoping paid work, how to scope an AEO retainer lists the deliverables I would expect.
Common AEO mistakes
- Writing for machines only. The page still needs to serve a human.
- Splitting one idea into many thin pages. Google says chunking is not needed.
- Promising rankings. Generated answers are not a ranking list.
- Ignoring the date. Stale answers are the easiest to replace.
- Treating the term as a product. AEO is a method, not a tool.
FAQ
What is answer engine optimization in one sentence?
AEO is formatting and writing content so AI answer engines can understand it and choose it as the direct answer to a question. It focuses on being cited or quoted, not only ranked.
What is an answer engine?
An answer engine gives a direct response to a question instead of just a list of links. Examples include ChatGPT with search, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Is AEO different from SEO?
The goals and metrics differ, but most methods overlap. Google says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO from its perspective. In practice, SEO gets you found and AEO helps you get selected.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
Often used interchangeably, though some sources define GEO as broader and others as narrower. Wikipedia notes there is no consensus definition.
Does AEO require schema markup?
No. Google says structured data is not required for its generative AI features. Schema can still describe your content accurately for other purposes.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
Google says Google Search does not use llms.txt and that it neither helps nor harms visibility there. I have not seen reliable evidence that it drives citations elsewhere.
How long should an AEO answer be?
Some guides recommend 40-60 words under each heading. It is a useful editing constraint but not a verified rule. Test lengths against your own pages and prompts.
How do I measure AEO success?
Use a repeatable prompt panel, record date, model and location, repeat runs and report share of voice as a range. Also watch Search Console's Generative AI performance report for Google.
Can an AEO specialist guarantee AI citations?
No. Answers are generated and vary between runs. A guarantee is a warning sign.
